Gibson has forever inscribed his name in the guitar's pantheon, from jazz to rock, blues to metal. Created in 1894 by Orville H. Gibson in Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA, the company revolutionized the guitar world with innovations such as the humbuckers or the Flying V, Explorer, and Firebird shapes. With ambassadors ranging from Charlie Christian to Slash, through Tommi Iommi and, of course, Lester Polfus, Gibson has traveled through the ages and musical styles and has established itself as a leading brand of electric and acoustic guitar.
M2M (Made To Measure) is the pinnacle of the custom guitar. This Custom Shop range allows you to create a guitar built to the specifications you want and select all the components (wood, electronics, etc.) and the finish.
We're really glad we managed to get our hands on this one. A M2M VOS '59 Les Paul, faithful reproduction of the originals, but even better. The flamed maple top is grade 5A (that's a lot) and it shows. The Abilene Sunset Burst finish is stunning, although to be perfectly honest, one sometimes wonders why Gibson marketing is playing around with names like that. But once you grab it, you forget everything, and you let yourself feel the quality that has elevated the brand to its legendary level. It's a rock (ok, jazz) guitar, but it exudes the nobility of an old violin or piano. Top of the range. It arrived flawlessly set, and a final touch made it perfect. The action is low, and still allows for great control.
It has blasting mids, that naughty one! The rosewood fingerboard, and the mahogany neck glued to the body with a long tenon provide an impressive roundness and sustain, with present yet defined lows, and highs full of harmonics. But the mids just explode through the pair of Custombuckers, which are so creamy that we immediately had a cholesterol spike. It's both an instrument and a work of art.
