Gibson has forever engraved its name in the hall of fame of guitar, from jazz to rock, blues and metal. Founded in 1894 by Orville H. Gibson in Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA, the company has revolutionized the guitar world with technical and aesthetic innovations such as the humbuckers or the Flying V, Explorer and Firebird shapes. With ambassadors like Charlie Christian and Slash, or Tommi Iommi and, of course, Lester Polfus, Gibson crosses the ages and musical styles, and stands out as a must-have brand of guitar, both electric and acoustic.

This Les Paul Special is a limited edition from Gibson, which has chosen to honor the Les Paul Special Double Cutaway with a superb TV Black finish that shows the veins of an obviously beautiful mahogany. This is a guitar built according to a typical Gibson recipe: mahogany body, mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard, and two P-90 pickups. The rest is ultra classic, with a slim taper neck profile, a 12" radius, a wraparound bridge, and Kluson tuners.

The first obvious thing to notice when picking up this guitar is that it is very light. No shoulder pain, no fatigue, and therefore no physiotherapy sessions required. It's still a guitar with a heavy tone, as we'll see later on. Reminiscent of the Les Paul Junior, the cutaway of the Les Paul Special DC allows access to the upper frets well beyond the body/neck joint, which, combined with the slim taper, makes this guitar playable across the range with great ease.

Although it's lightweight, this guitar has a big sound when plugged in. In clean or overdriven mode, the pickups add just the right amount of bite and rumble to a tube amp, with fuzz-like nuances just waiting to explode when set to the edge of breakup. It can sweep through a sonic palette ranging from piercing cleans to sharp crunches to velvety fuzz. It's an all-rounder, from pop, where it will shine intensely, to rock, where the harmonic richness of mahogany is superbly rendered by the P-90.
