Founded in the mid-70s, Schecter first established itself as an aftermarket parts manufacturer, specializing in parts for Fender guitars. Building on its success, the brand then began producing high-end guitars: its specialty are Custom models, built for players like Mark Knopfler, Pete Townsend, Keith Merrow or Michael Anthony. Schecter WAS owned by the owner of the GIT (Guitar Institute of Technology) at one point during its existence, but IT is now under Japanese management. For over 20 years, the brand has now cultivated know-how and attention to detail in the creation of modern-type guitars. It sports two main ranges: a "made in USA" Custom Shop, which equips professionals today, and a "made in Asia" range, whose designs and manufacturing quality convince a growing number of guitarists in all styles.

This Hollywood Custom Burl Maple Top is a beauty, and sounds as lively as it looks. Despite its modern appearance, it is rather vintage oriented, both in terms of sound and feel. Its neck has a rather thick, hand-filling C-profile (think Les Paul '58), and its pickups (a pair of Seymour Duncan) deliver a true PAF tone, worthy of the originals. The most amazing thing is the expressivity of this guitar: it transcribes perfectly the playser's intention (the wrong notes still sound wrong though, we tried).

The HipShot tuners and the bridge offer very high performances. The switch has 3 positions and the very reactive pots allow to navigate between the well known nuances (neck, blend, bridge). All positions have a balanced sound, with a strong presence in the low and midrange, and outstanding clarity in the highs. The whole thing is still very articulate, even with a lot of gain, and the warmth is there. You'll be able to trip for a through the tonal landscapes offered by this really great Strat, which is not so much of a Strat after all. Except for the comfort. Damn, it's Stratty.
