Gibson has forever engraved its name in the hall of fame of guitar, from jazz to rock, blues and metal. Founded in 1894 by Orville H. Gibson in Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA, the company has revolutionized the guitar world with technical and aesthetic innovations such as the humbuckers or the Flying V, Explorer and Firebird shapes. With ambassadors like Charlie Christian and Slash, or Tommi Iommi and, of course, Lester Polfus, Gibson crosses the ages and musical styles, and stands out as a must-have brand of guitar, both electric and acoustic.

Tom Murphy and his team create each Murphy Lab guitar in the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville, Tennessee using the most sophisticated tools and technology. Each instrument is handcrafted and finished with techniques that produce the most authentic aging impressions, and thus features the character, sound and feel that elevated the original models to iconic status.

After testing thousands of Gibson Les Paul over the past 50 years of our existence, we never imagined we could ever be surprised again by the guitars they produce. We were sometimes a little more excited about certain series for the accuracy of the replicas, or certain finishes, but it seemed to us that at a certain level, Gibson could only add nines behind the decimal point. We were wrong: this Les Paul '59 Cherry Teaburst Murphy Lab Light Aged is a clear quantum leap in both aesthetics and tone.

.

It's an accurate recreation of the instrument that has been lauded by decades of guitarists and was the foundation of the firm's golden age. The mahogany body and neck, figured AAA maple top, 12" radius Indian rosewood fingerboard, and a pair of Custombuckers Alnico 3 (PAF replicas by the brand that invented the PAF) make up this absolutely beautiful instrument. The Cherry Teaburst color sported by our model is a beauty, with a deep, vibrant sunburst and most importantly, a figured top whose tigering illustrates the high quality of the woods used.

.

This is an incredible work of art. The look, the feel, the tone... Everything is as good as it gets, and it's great. The Light Aged finish is a success: from the belt marks to the oxidation of the bridge screws, it's not obvious that you can differentiate the result of Murphy Lab work from the effects of time. The hardware is finely aged, but only from a cosmetic point of view. Functionally, the guitar is, of course, brand new. The playing comfort is that of a Les Paul, whose reduced body size compensates for the lack of recesses on the back edges of the body when played sitting down. When playing standing, it's a Les Paul, but it's fairly light in its class, and you won't need a subscription to the gym before you can play an entire concert with it.

.

When we plugged it in, we expected a Les Paul, and we were right. What we didn't know was how much. From creamy crunches to full, harmonically rich cleans, the Custombucker Alnico 3 probably have the best sound around when it comes to chasing the PAF's. The fat tone you'd expect from a Gibson Les Paul is there, and the bite you want from a humbucker is clearly available throughout the pot course, which opens up the tonal palette to everything from jazz to hard rock, and of course pop and blues.
