Founded in 1985 in Stevensville, Maryland, USA, PRS Guitars (named after its founder, luthier Paul Reed Smith), immediately took up the challenge of designing and producing guitars that meet the challenge of offering instruments with uncompromising sound versatility, exceptional playing comfort, and the highest level of beauty and craftsmanship. With models like the McCarty and the Custom 24, PRS Guitars has made a sensational debut in the world of guitar, dominating today by marrying the qualities of the Stratocaster (vibrato, crystal clear sound, soft bass, comfort of the game) and the Les Paul (creamy crunch, mediums affirmed, endless sustain and luxurious finishes), adding a character of its own.
Special edition for PRS’s 40th anniversary, this Custom 24 retains the proportions and balance that defined the original model, while introducing unique materials and a new finish. Primarily a stage and recording instrument, it’s aimed at players looking for a direct, responsive, and distinctive PRS to handle any style.
The solid mahogany body is topped with a figured mango cap, a tonewood rarely seen in luthiery, selected here for its quilt-like visual texture and clear resonance. The satin nitrocellulose finish is thin and open-pored, allowing the woods to breathe. The overall look is understated, almost raw, yet refined in every detail.
The glued-in mahogany neck features a Pattern Thin profile tailored for fast, precise playing. The ebony fingerboard (10" radius, 24 frets, 25" scale) delivers sharp attack, stable intonation, and immediate response. “Old School Birds” inlays and a “Pre-Factory” headstock logo add a historical touch without excessive nostalgia.
Soundwise, the new PRS DMO (Dynamic, Musical, Open) pickups offer a wide, well-defined tonal palette, with a natural balance between round lows, open mids, and expressive highs. The 5-way switch provides a full range of textures, from thick humbuckers to crisp and articulate split tones. Whether played through a Super Reverb, a Friedman Dirty Shirley, or even a VOX AC30, it impressed us with its clarity and articulation in both clean and crunch modes.
The PRS Gen III tremolo and Phase III locking tuners ensure rock-solid tuning stability even under heavy playing. Smoked black hardware subtly complements the instrument’s visual identity, and the PRS ATA Multi-Fit case keeps it safe on the road.
