Gibson has forever secured its place in the guitar hall of fame, from jazz to rock, blues to metal. Founded in 1894 by Orville H. Gibson in Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA, the company revolutionised the guitar world with technical and aesthetic innovations such as humbuckers and the Flying V, Explorer, and Firebird shapes. With ambassadors ranging from Charlie Christian to Slash, via Tony Iommi and, of course, Lester Polfus, Gibson has spanned eras and musical styles, establishing itself as an essential brand for both electric and acoustic guitars.
Tom Murphy and his team craft each Murphy Lab guitar at the Gibson Custom Shop workshops in Nashville, Tennessee, using the most advanced tools and technologies. Every instrument is handmade and finished with techniques that produce the most authentic ageing effects, giving it the character, tone, and feel that have elevated the original models to iconic status.
A historically accurate 1964 reissue, this ES-335 blends solidbody-style sustain with the airy resonance of a semi-hollow construction. The Murphy Lab Heavy Aged finish gives it a seasoned look without compromising playability.
The 3-ply maple/poplar/maple body with solid maple centre block offers excellent projection and control. The medium “C” mahogany neck, paired with a 12" Indian rosewood fingerboard, delivers an even, consistent response across the register with a familiar vintage feel.
The unpotted Custombucker Alnico III pickups reproduce the harmonic depth and clarity of a true PAF set, with detailed dynamics and great touch sensitivity. Electronics are carefully selected: CTS 500K audio taper pots, Paper-in-Oil capacitors, and Switchcraft selector and output jack.
We ran it through various amps (Princeton Reverb, Super Reverb, Tweed Deluxe, JMP, JTM, copies of Dumble amps) and it delivered every time — clean tones with definition, breakup with focus, overdrive with bite, and always that natural compression and bloom only a great laminate body can give. No flattery, no tricks. Just tone, straight to the hand.
