The Blackstar TV-10 A Head is a simple, compact and usable tube head that avoids the whole spaceship-control-panel routine. Ten watts, one channel, two voicings: the approach is direct, with enough headroom for home practice, recording, or playing a small stage with the right cabinet.
The voicing is American-style. The 6L6 gives a clear, open response, with present highs, controlled lows, though not stiff, and a fairly firm attack that cuts well in a small band with a drummer who knows when not to destroy the room. In clean mode, the amp also works very well as a pedal platform. Drive mode delivers warm, progressive crunch. This stays in blues, classic rock, roots and indie territory. The single Tone control limits fine EQ shaping, but also pushes you to work with the guitar, the volume, the pickups and the cabinet.
The emulated line/headphone output, series effects loop and onboard reverb make this head more practical than a purely vintage-style small amp. The included footswitch lets you switch between voicings and control the reverb. A well-designed format for players who want tube tone, reasonable volume and real interaction with the guitar and the fingers.
