Founded in the late '70s by the late Bill Collings in Texas, Collings Guitars is the flagship of American manufacturing. While the brand now uses modern manufacturing processes, it makes no compromises: every element is carefully selected, and every detail is given special attention, so much so that the quality of the models produced systematically surpasses that of the most renowned Custom Shops.
We have the pleasure to be very close to Collings, and to be able to make a drastic selection within their production. But the quality of these guitars is such that it is challenging to find one that is not exceptional. This OM is one of a duo that we have selected for you. It has a Sitka top (solid, of course). Don't hesitate to have a look at its sister, whose table is Adirondack.
The aged Sitka top (by an unbelievable firing process) is a beauty to make all the queens pale. The Indian rosewood used for the back and sides reveals natural fibers and its truly dark color hints at rich and powerful tones. The Macassar ebony fingerboard is as pleasing to play as it is to look at: dense, black and elegant, the fingers glide with great ease all along the neck.
Attention to detail is exemplary. From the bridge to the mechanics, the assembly (even the glue), the inlays, everything is meticulously crafted. The bridge, also made of Macassar ebony, resists tension perfectly and transmits vibrations to the table with great fullness. The intonation is perfect; the action is comfortable; the whole is beautifully crafted to allow a musician to convey the pleasure of playing this instrument to his audience (even if this audience is just a cat in the living room).
The neck's profile evolves to accompany the musician's needs: at the top, it is D-shaped, at the bottom, it is soft V-shaped, and the compensated radius adds to the playing comfort. This geometry, which makes it possible to quickly find an ideal position for fretting the strings according to the playing, is here extremely carefully maintained by the Collings workshops' luthiers. Indeed, thanks to this hybrid profile, low chords do not tighten the thumb, and high notes do not tire the wrist.
As for the sound, it is so good that we thought we could play better on this guitar. If the gods wanted an OM, this is probably the one they would choose. The very thin nitro varnish allows a very organic vibration of the top. Its OM format produces a sound with a prominent midrange and exceptional brilliance. The basses are a little more recessed, but their presence acts as an anchor for the rest of the frequency range, which is very defined. It comes in a case that alone sets the tone.
