Gibson has forever written his name into the guitar pantheon, from jazz to rock to blues to metal. Founded in 1894 by Orville H. Gibson in Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA, the company revolutionized the world of the guitar with technical and aesthetic innovations such as the humbuckers or the Flying V, Explorer and Firebird shapes. With ambassadors ranging from Charlie Christian to Slash, through Tommi Iommi and, of course, Lester Polfus, Gibson has travelled through the ages and musical styles, and has established itself as a leading brand in electric and acoustic guitar.
The Paul Custom by Gibson Custom Shop is an excellent title, with performance to match. The all mahogany build of the Custom gives the tone an aggressive character that has seduced metal players, but let's not forget that this is a jazz guitar that Gibson thought they were creating. The body is heavy and dense, and the 50s profile neck is thick: it's a demanding mistress that you have to learn to tame, but it's comfortable and it is still a joy to play, even if it requires a little effort to conquer. This guitar resonates powerfully, and the finish is impeccable. The golden hardware and the "dressed up" look are stunning. The tone too.
With 3 humbuckers, Gibson has replaced the intermediate position with a "real" position: it's a very special tone, quite unique. It has something full and round that enhances the lows and amplifies the enveloping edge of clean sounds, but with a clear roughness in the midrange that carries the timbre into avenues on the verge of breakup. As for the neck and bridge positions, they deliver what is expected of them, but with a twist: there is something heavy, almost mean, in the way the frequencies are accentuated. Something that comes from the guts. It's like the smile of a princess and the look of a witch on the face of an angel: a fascinating and irresistible paradox.
