The flagship of Fender's production, instruments from the Custom Shop range are guitars and basses that meet the highest quality standards, be it in the wood selection, the pickups winding, the finishes or the overall build quality. This results in highly reliable instruments with inimitable sound, providing great playability.
Fender's Custom Shop commissioned 7 of its Master Builders to create guitars that fit a specific brief: if you had to pick up a single guitar for a concert on a Friday night, what would it be?
This Telecaster is Paul Waller's answer: a Telecaster replicating the design of the '53 models, and incorporating surprising electronics, which give it a versatility and an unequalled bite. Its two-piece, ultra-light ash body, with a very musical and open resonance, presents the iconic design that has made the history of rock 'n roll since its inception. The guitar remains well balanced, and very comfortable to play in both sitting and standing positions. The semi-translucent white blonde finish "Journeyman Relic" gives it the inimitable character of Custom Shop guitars.
The "rift sawn" maple neck for greater dimensional stability (i.e. it resists even better to temperature changes) and its maple fretboard add to the tone's brightness. Its '53 soft V profile provides an easy grip but still fills the hand, offering great rhythmic as well as melodic playing comfort. On the look and feel side, it is ready to conquer the hearts of the most demanding musicians, that of the most refined amateurs, and of course the eyes of the most informed audience.
The crowning is inside: its Custom Shop "handwound" pickups (a 51 Nocaster on the neck and a Broadcaster on the bridge) are complimented by a +25bd mid-boost (the same as the Clapton signature Strat) built on top of the volume knob. A notch halfway marks the end of the volume function and the activation of the boost. To balance the output level, the pickups are slightly "underwound". This design offers easy and natural control for all those who are used to managing their tone with the volume knob. The characteristic brilliance of the Telecaster bridge position and the round and smooth tone of the neck position both benefit from an overdose of versatility and presence, opening endless possibilities for solos that cut through the mix, or ravaging rhythms. Its vintage hardware, tweaked to perfection by the Master Builder, is aged to provide the looks years of playing give an instrument this type.
